UOP LLC (Des Plaines, IL) has announced that Pertamina has selected UOP as the technology supplier for a new 52,000-bpsd grassroots naphtha complex at the Balongan refinery in Indramayu, West Java.

The naphtha complex, which will be designed to process excess full-range naphtha from the Pertamina refineries, consists of a 52,000-bpsd naphtha hydrotreating unit, a 29,000-bpsd CCR Platforming unit and a 21,000-bpsd Penex/DIH light naphtha isomerization unit. Planned start-up for the complex is January, 2003.

The complex is part of the Indonesian government's Blue Sky Program to phase lead out of gasoline and produce environmentally friendly fuels in line with international treaties, 1992 Earth Summit protocols and the IMF and World Bank MOU's with the Indonesian government.

The naphtha complex will allow the Balongan refinery to produce 100% unleaded gasoline and it will boost the Balongan refinery's gasoline production capacity by 48,000 bpsd to a new capacity of 107,000 bpsd of unleaded gasoline.

Basic engineering design on the new naphtha complex will start immediately, and financing for this important project is being finalized.

Pertamina and UOP's Refining and Petrochemicals Services (RPS) group are also engaged on naphtha configuration and gasoline blending optimization studies for other Pertamina refineries to produce unleaded gasoline.
